Random Fact of the Day

“Research has shown that women who have complete transection of the spinal cord can experience orgasms through the vagus nerve, which can go from the uterus, cervix and probably the vagina to the brain.”

So, if you’re a woman who experiences a severing of her spinal cord, you’re not necessarily done with orgasms.

To some extent, a similar occurrence happens with men – although, they may not experience the full psychological experience of orgasm.

Orgasm and ejaculation are spinal cord reflexes – they really don’t need to involve the brain. Certainly, the brain helps speed up arousal and adds the psychological experience that accompanies orgasm, but it’s not a necessary participant.

Of course, all of this assumes that there is no damage to the nerves that are responsible for sexual arousal and response.

It’s an interesting branch of medecine that I had not been exposed to. I was looking up some info on the vagus nerve and stumbled across it.

    What will I learn tomorrow!?
