  • Coming up on 10 Years

Jenn and I will celebrate our tenth wedding anniversary this coming July. As we happened to be in the area, we stopped to take some pictures on the actual spot of our nuptials. Literally where we are standing in the picture. It seemed to be a weekend of recreating photos.

We wandered down to Crescent Beach to enjoy the setting sun.

And here’s a random picture of Rumford, ME with the paper mill in the background and the Androscoggin river running toward it. This mill provides a lot of the livelihood of the town and is slowly shutting down.

  • Detroit Airport Fountain

There’s a fountain in Terminal A of the Detroit Airport. It’s pretty cool. If you ever have the opportunity, wander over and watch it for a while.

  • Delta: Doing it Wrong

Delta recently revamped their website, Delta.com. For those of us who fly a lot on Delta, it’s a useful place to be, but not when they make arbitrary demands that decrease our security.

    Password change screen for Delta.com

This is the password change screen for their new website update. It requires a password between 6-20 characters, with no special characters, at least one upper and lowercase letter, and at least one number.

    This is stupid.

I have a very secure set of passwords. None of them fit into this category; they don’t even come close. Therefore, I can’t do an easily modifiable base password to fit this arbitrary set of rules. Therefore, I’m probably not going to remember the password. Therefore I can either write it down (that’s secure!) or just realize that every time I try and use Delta.com, I’ll be having to reset my password.

Delta, I’m a bit disappointed in you. Let’s try and stay up with the times, ok? Let’s also realize that if you make enough arbitrary requirements on passwords, your users are going to be annoyed, thus less likely to recommend your website. Off to travelocity they go, in that case.

    Six Friends - 1999

A month ago, I posted this image that had been taken in 1999. It occurred to me that we were all going to be together in the same town so why not use some time and take the same picture?

    Six Friends - 2012

The time of year is a little different, and the precise angle and lens aperture was a bit off, but this is about as close as we were likely to come to the same spot and pose. We all look pretty good, don’t we?

Thanks to our friend John Sassatelli for taking the pictures.

  • Jenn’s Birthday Cake

    Birthday Cake by Jacob Hollis

For birthdays in the Ruhsam/Bowie household, cakes are provided. This is traditional of course, and we try to make sure it happens in some manner. She or I will make a cake for the other.

This year, on the run-up to Jenn’s birthday, our friend Jacob asked me a question. “Bill, is it important to you that you make Jenn’s birthday cake?”

To which I responded, “I’m a project manager. It’s my job to ensure that a cake arrives, not necessarily to be the one producing it.” Thusly divesting myself of the usual job of actually baking said cake.

Jacob, I may not have mentioned, is almost finished with culinary school here in town and knows what he’s doing. I was glad to pass the buck graciously allow Jacob to build the multi-layered buttercream raspberry-ganache chocolate cake. It was wonderful and tasty and way too many calories.

He also makes wonderful cupcakes, which Jenn hired him to do for her last CAbi party. If you’re local and you need some food stuffs of this nature, I’d recommend contacting him.

  • Outer Banks Marathon

Tim, Andrew, Jenn at the Finish

We attended the Outer Banks Marathon last weekend. There were four races and four spectators and much fun was had by all. Brian Waters showed up to demonstrate what fast looks like in the half marathon, Jenn ran the half along with him and Gave Him A Run For His Money™. Andrew Azab and Tim Gallus both ran the full distance and showed the race course what was what.

The full flickr set is available here.

    Here’s where we stayed.

  • Ashford Dunwoody Diverging Diamond Dedication

    20121116-120532.jpg
Today was the dedication ceremony for the Ashford Dunwoody diverging diamond interchange. I’ve had a few posts about this before, surrounding the opening of the crossovers, and I’m happy to say its doing well.

Lieutenant Governor Casey Cagle gave a speech along with various other dignitaries.

I’m proud to have been involved with this project and I’m looking forward to seeing how it operates in years to come.

  • Leonid Meteors Tonight!

You should go outside and watch the Leonid meteor shower tonight (Friday Nov. 16, 2012). It will produce many more shooting stars than the normal 6-10 per hour, and if we’re lucky, it’ll be a one-per-second show. It all depends on the density of the stream that the Earth is passing through (see the link).

What I find coolest about these periodic meteor showers is that you can see exactly which direction the Earth is flying by following the various meteor trails back to their point of origin. The spot in the sky from which they all seem to originate is the direction that the Earth is passing through the cometary leftovers. That’s cool.

According to the wikipedia post, the Leonids hit the Earth at 72 km/sec, which if you know a bit of orbital mechanics means that the shower stream is orbiting the Sun in retrograde, as that’s the only way a sun-orbiting body can impact the Earth at that speed.

    Like I said, very cool.

I don’t have a good viewing location around me, but I’ll go out on my porch with my sleeping bag and just hang out watching the sky.

  • Let the Fun Begin! Georgia 2013 Legislative Session!

As of today, Georgia legislators are allowed to pre-file bills that they wish considered during the upcoming legislative session that starts in January. They may pre-file between November 15 and the Friday before the legislative session begins (second Monday in January).

In recent years, the first set of pre-filed bills were right-wing-nut bills put forth by Bobby Franklin, of no small renown. They had to do with Personhood and Gold Standard and 10th Amendment stuff, just to name a few. This year, Representative Franklin is dead and I’m very curious to see who will submit the first pre-file, and what that bill will be.

    Stay tuned!

Today we visited the Wright Brother’s National Park. Aren’t we cute.
