• Crazy stuff you learn by surfing

Through a long and tortuous chain of links and lookups1, I came upon an interesting wikipedia entry: Flag of Convenience.

Did you know that you can register a ship (an ocean-going SHIP!) in Mongolia! You can have a ship sailing around the world, carrying cargo, with a large name on the back (say) Poseidon, out of Ulan Bator. That’s crazy.

At least if you’re registered in Bolivia (which is also landlocked last time I checked), you’re only 100 miles from the ocean. Mongolia’s nearest large body of water is Lake Baikal.

The weird stuff you learn every day really blows my noggin.

1 I’ll be posting a topic which will lend some clues as to this long and tortuous chain at a later date.

  • Happy Equinox!

Five days ago we celebrated the Ides of March. Today we get to celebrate the our free annual trip around the sun!

I like the solstices and equinoxes (equinoxae? equinices?) because no one has latched onto them like the Hallmark Holiday (Valentines Day) or Halloween.

At 18:25 UTC (13:25 EST), we’ll be crossing the celestial equator and there will be much rejoicing.

  • "V for Vendetta"

I find it dissapointing that so many movie reviewers are poo-poohing this movie. I saw it and I liked it!

Of course, given the nature of the previews, you might expect (understandably) that it’s an action film, which it is not. And, you might expect that because of the Wachowski brothers’ involvement that it would be a ground-breaking cinematographic epoch, which it’s not (but neither were Matrices II and III).

But, it is a good tale, with good acting on the part of the main characters. The obvious parallels references to the War on Terror are a bit overblown, and the Nazi-esque symbolism is way over the top, but if you ignore the backdrop and concentrate on V and Evey (Hugo Weaving and Natalie Portman), I think you will be satisfied.

Natalie Portman has a cute head, by the way.

  • First Round Pain!

Well, so much for me picking Iowa to win this years NCAA Men’s Basketball Tournament. [sigh]

I was doing well first round right up to that moment. All of my first round picks that had not made it to second round were slated to lose there anyhow, so I still had plenty of opportunity to make it!

Alas, so much for the Atlanta Regional for me. Go Ohio! who I have playing Iowa for the championship.

Yes, I’m contributing to the $4B of lost productivity.

  • Drug of Choice

You know you drink too much coffee when, upon arriving at work and discovering no coffee, you jitter while it brews and then—almost orgasmically—sigh with the first sip.

    I need to detoxify.

  • High School Dream Come True

Today, I was sent a video excerpt from a CBS news broadcast. I’m not going to post it because I’m 99.44% certain I’d be violating copyright to do so. However, you can read about the feel-good story by clicking any of the links here at Google.

It is the story from February, 2006, of an autistic high school student who gets his chance to shine in the last basketball game of the year.

  • Happy Murdered Caesar Day!

The only time of year when we talk about that month’s “Ides” is March! That’s too bad. I think I should start dating my official documents with the Roman System.

But, today we celebrate the passing of the Roman Republic into the Roman Empire. Go Rome!

  • It's the Tides!

Sunday, I was on my section of the Appalachian Trail, cleaning out waterbars and removing some blowdowns from the trail (Flat Stanley was helping out). Two very interesting things happened while I was out there.

  • "They're taking the Hobbits to Isengard!"

Just in case you needed some song to stick in your head for days on end, you should check out this remixed LOTR video.

Of course, while you’re at that site, you should glance around and see some of the other posts that entertained me:

For example, Random Personal Picture Finder. This one can keep you amused for hours.

  • Wal*Ocaust

I don’t really have an opinion regarding this, but I do think it’s amusing.
