This particular meme has been spreading through the blogging community I frequent, especially scienceblogs (of which I read about 1/3), and I thought I would chime in.

I Don't Qualify, But if I Did…
…the following would be my badges.

I say I don’t qualify as a science communicator because: it causes problems in
themy workplace; I have neither the skill nor the experience to be a good science advocate. Therefore I cannot claim the required “talking science” badge.I do what I can when people spout strange things. And, I tend to read a lot of esoteric articles, so I try to bring the less media-concentrated science to light with the people around me.

Peter Hamilton; Void Trilogy
For anyone who cares, Peter Hamilton is supposed to be publishing the first novel of the Void Trilogy in summer ’07. Yay for us.
Hopefully, he will have scaled back a bit from the grand overarching craziness that was Pandora’s Star and Judas Unchained. They were both wayyyyy too long and complex. I believe that people who complain about world building have Peter Hamilton in mind.
Don’t get me wrong, I like his writing. It is original and interesting, but sometimes you just have to cut to the chase. Tad Williams has the same problem. And don’t get me started about Terry Goodkind and his inability to finish a story.
If you want to read some good stuff by Hamilton, stick with the Night’s Dawn Triology, and the first two Greg Mandel books.

Digital Archiving
An article in today’s NY Times about the lack of comprehensive digital archives (due to expense) reminded me that I’m behind on my job of ripping all 400+ or our music CD’s.
We probably have 10% already residing on our various music directories, now I have to do the rest. It’s March 11th. We’ll see how long it takes me.

Expert System labeled Fraud
A computer program has been abjured from practicing law in California.
The software did, indeed, go far beyond providing clerical services. It determined where (particularly, in which schedule) to place information provided by the debtor, selected exemptions for the debtor and supplied relevant legal citations. Providing such personalized guidance has been held to constitute the practice of law.
