  • Outer Banks Marathon Weekend

    IMG_0980

We are in Nags Head, NC, to attend the Outer Banks Marathon. Jennifer is running the half along with Speedy Gonzales Brian Waters, and our friends Tim and Andrew are running the full.

The race is tomorrow. Today we go to the race expo, the First in Flight museum, and just hang out on the beach. More updates tomorrow during the race.

  • Voting Day!

    2010-11-02_IMAG0235

I’m off to exercise my franchise. Remember, it’s your right, privilege, and duty to vote. We are the world’s oldest republic and we should act like it.

  • Jenn had a Birthday!

So wish her happy birthday. She’s another year better.

The wonderful cake was created by Jacob Hollis. He’s studying to be a chef. We hate taste-testing his stuff.  We hatesses it so bad.

  • New York City Marathon

I’m still shocked by the decision to cancel the New York City Marathon. Yesterday on Twitter I said it was like cancelling the BCS championship game, but I think that’s a bad metaphor. It’s like cancelling the Macy’s Thanksgiving Day Parade.

It’s not just about the sporting event. This means that additional revenues brought in by the runners, spectators, vendors, etc., won’t be coming into the city. On the flip side, the police and other city employees who are busy cleaning up and recovering from the storm will not now be diverted to race preparation and protection.

I understand the decision, but I’m still shocked.

  • Jukebox the Ghost

We went to the Masquerade to see Jukebox the Ghost, one of my favorite bands, open for Motion City Soundtrack. As usual ((I say as usual, but I’ve only seen them live once before.)) they were awesome. They’ve got great stage presence and know how to perform. Some bands make their live shows stand out by tweaking their music ((Alanis Morrisette is a bad example of this.)), others do it by being spectacular performers ((Barenaked Ladies.)), and others have bits of both. Jukebox the Ghost sits in the third category by giving us new harmonies on their songs, and being really fun to watch play their instruments.

I highly recommend catching them on their tour, or waiting for their upcoming headline tour in the winter.

As I said, Jukebox opened for Motion City, but there was an opener for the open: Now,Now. ((Now,Now is one of those bands, like Fun. that should have a style guide on how to spell their band name. This is how it’s on their website.)) Enter blurry iphone picture.

They were good enough that I bought their album. One takeaway from hanging out with the Extraordinary Contraptions and going to a lot of indie music concerts is I’m much more likely to support artists by purchasing their music than I used to be. As long as they don’t suck, of course, and Now,Now didn’t suck.
