Things that make you go HOLY SHIT!
A person in the Atlanta Flickr Group posted this. Normally around here I’m dodging ladders in the interstate, not marble rocks.

CSS Help
I’m punting on a CSS problem.
You may have noticed that if you see an image on this blog, on the front page, it has a black border, but no padding. However, if you click through to the post itself, suddenly the image has padding. A nice neat, 4 pixel whitespace with a black border. This is the intended setup.
I cannot figure out why the images on the front page of the blog are not operating this way. Obviously, it’s got something to do with inheritance and cascading style assignments, but I’ll be buggered if I know what it is.
Anyone want to take a look and see if it’s something bloody obvious? The images are (generally) class “alignleft” and the front page matter is under div “narrowcolumn” while the post page is under div “widecolumn”.
Let me know if you figure it out.

Evolution in 10 minutes
Gacked from the Bad Astronomer’s blog.
Oftentimes, you have to already have a degree in biology to refute the weird assertions people make about evolution. That speciation hasn’t been observed is one I always have a problem with because, ahem, I’m not a biologist and I don’t keep the details at the front of my brain. All I can say is, “Yes, speciation has been observed in nature and in experiment, but I’ll have to go look up where.” This is usually automatically poo-poohed because I didn’t know right then what the facts were. Alas.
But this is a great video. Very educational.

Cloverfield
Jenn and I saw Cloverfield last night. Rating, 4 stars (out of five).
Firstly the things that bugged me: Buildings don’t lean against other buildings at the angles and heights that were shown in the movie. Also, if you’ve ever played the computer game “Half Life”, you’ll get some serious flashbacks while watching the film. Lastly, the hand-cam aspect of the film is a bit much at times for the eyeballs.
Now, the things that were great! Back on the hand-cam filming: Despite the motion-sickness inducing jerkiness, the style of filming was perfect for what the filmakers were trying to accomplish. Our (the audience’s) point of view is from this one camera which is not omniscient; it isn’t in every place at the right time. We only get peeks of the monster as it rampages through Manhattan. If something is happening away from the viewpoint of the camera, we only hear noises and screams. This was well done, I think.
More spoilery things beneath the cut

One Step Closer to Success
Republican Fred Thompson has dropped out of the race for the presidential nomination.
Thank you, elvis!
Oh, wait. He’s not one of the candidates who has seen a ufo.
Nevertheless, it’s a good thing he’s gone. He represents the third least desirable president in the current mix (Ron Paul and Mike Huckabee being 2 and 1, respectively).
So, the most hawkish candidate, with the second lowest respect for personal determination of morals is gone. Yay.

I'm not an Oscar Guy
2007 is a celebrated year for the Ruhsam in our household.
Why?
Because I managed to see almost none of the Oscar-nominated films. You have to go all the way down to … wait! The nominations have been yanked as I looked at them. How amusing. I guess someone published the website too early.
Anyway, as I was perusing, I saw that the only movies I’d seen that had any nominations were Transformers (sound editing), Pirates of the Caribbean (
Costumes? I forget exactlyMakeup), andthere was one other I’m forgetting at the moment. I think it was for Makeup.the other one was The Golden Compass for Art Direction. So, basically, I don’t see Oscar films, apparently.
I’d give you the scoop on what was up as I was looking at Best Actor/Actress and Best Film, but why not just wait 30 minutes and it’ll be back up.

Harry Dresden News
Other than the fact that the next book in the Harry Dresden series will be coming out in April which I’m very much looking forward to, there a novella being published that features Harry’s older brother Thomas. Here’s a quote that is entirely sweet:
I’m not Harry Dresden.
Harry’s a wizard. A genuine, honest-to-goodness wizard. He’s Gandalf on crack and an IV of Red Bull, with a big leather coat and a .44 revolver in his pocket.
According to the link, the special edition with the leather cover is already sold out, but I’ll look forward to the trade paperback anyway. I’m not a hardback book snob; I like softback.
